Etzioni in the Daily Beast

When, only a few months ago, we announced foreign-policy expert Amitai Eztioni's Avoiding War with China: Two Nations, One World as part of our spring list, the world was a different place. Since then, a new adminstration has moved into the White House, including a top advisor, Steve Bannon, who in the spring of 2016 made alarming comments about the future of U.S.-China relations. A recent Guardian piece ran a March 2016 quote by Bannon that included this remark: "We’re going to war in the South China Sea in five to 10 years. There’s no doubt about that." But is war with China inevitable? Etzioni's forthcoming book provides a shrewd overview of China's intentions and capabilities, and lays out a comprehensive, practical strategy for avoiding a military conflict. The book will be published May 2; in the meantime the Daily Beast has run a fascinating—and suddenly even more timely—excerpt, "Here's How to Avoid War with China." Read it here.
