This is a quick list of basic formatting instructions and should be referred to early in the submissions process.

Careful manuscript preparation from the outset can save both author and publisher time and effort later. Manuscripts (MSS) submitted for the Press's consideration should meet the following physical requirements in order to ensure accurate evaluation.

  •
  • All parts of the MS are double-spaced. There is no single-spaced text anywhere in the MS.

  • The entire MS is typed in 12-point (10 cpi) New Courier (this typeface) or another nonproportional "typewriter" font; only one font is used throughout.

  • Neither italics nor boldface is used; your word processor's underline code is used where you want italic text.

  • Chapter titles and subheads are typed upper- and lowercase (Like This and This), not in all caps (NOT LIKE THIS).

  • Automatic hyphenation is turned off.

  • Widow/orphan protection is turned off.

  • Margins are set to 1 inch all the way around.

  • Margins are set for left justification only.

  • Pages are numbered in the upper right corner straight through from beginning to end of the MS; only the page number appears (no other headers, and no footers).

  • All notes are grouped at the end of the text. Each chapter's notes are numbered beginning with 1 in each chapter.

  • The MS is not stapled or otherwise bound. All pages are printed on one side only.

  • If your book contains illustrations, photocopies accompany the MS at the evaluation stage.

  • Quotation marks and apostrophes are straight, not curly (not "smart quotes").

We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Please call your acquisitions editor or the managing editor if you have any questions about MS format.
