About the Author: 

Edward L. Ayers is President of the University of Richmond and the author of the Bancroft Prize–winning In the Presence of Mine Enemies: War in the Heart of America, 1859–1863. Carolyn R. Martin is Executive Assistant to the President at the University of Richmond and served as chair of the planning committee for hosting the "America on the Eve of the Civil War" Signature Conference.
